After attending the school of audio and music production at the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio Gearld began an apprenticeship under Tom Davis at J. Thomas Davis Guitar Maker in Columbus, Ohio. He apprenticed from 1994 to 1997, and then worked at J. Thomas Davis for twelve years. In April 2009, Gearld moved to Dayton, Ohio and opened his own shop.
Gearld is skilled at building, repairing and restoring all types of fretted instruments.
He specializes in repairing broken head stocks, neck resets, bridge reglues, cosmetic repairs, and full restorations. In 2003 he became a Fender “Gold Level” repair technician for both acoustic and electric guitars. He has a thorough understanding of instrument finishes and prides himself in the fact that most of his repairs are undetectable.
The list of hand made instruments Gearld has built includes steel string acoustic guitars, spanish style classical guitars, lap steels, ukuleles, and mandolins. He particularly enjoys making neck-thru-body bass guitars.
