Gearld’s career began in 1994 when he entered into an apprenticeship under Tom Davis at J. Thomas Guitar Maker in Columbus, Ohio.  For three years Gearld dedicated himself to the study of his craft and was subsequently hired at J. Thomas Davis, where he worked for the next twelve years. In 2009 Gearld moved to Dayton and opened his own shop, G. Strickland Guitar Maker.

Gearld’s experience in repairing and restoring all types of fretted instruments has resulted in a comprehensive understanding of instrument finishes and an ability to create repairs that are virtually undetectable. He specializes in repairing broken headstocks, neck resets, bridge re-glues, cosmetic repairs, and full restorations. While working at J. Thomas Davis Guitar Maker, Gearld also became a Fender “Gold Level” repair technician for both electric and acoustic guitars and has also performed warranty repair work for several other guitar manufacturers.

Gearld’s expertise can also be seen in the many instruments he has built throughout the years. These include tenor guitars steel string acoustic and Spanish style classical guitars, lap steels, mandolins, ukuleles, neck through body bass guitars, and citterns.

G. Strickland Guitar Maker is one of the only shops in Dayton that is dedicated to guitar building and repair.  With two decades of experience repairing, restoring, and building fretted instruments, Gearld Strickland is a uniquely talented craftsman and artist.
